Roommate matching questionnaire

Students answer lifestyle questions, so housing or camp leaders pair compatible roommates.

What's inside

Students who already have a roommate in mind name them, and everyone else gets matched on four habits that cause most roommate trouble.

Matching from four answers

Bedtime and tidiness predict most roommate conflicts. Sort the export by bedtime first, then pair within one point of tidiness.

Pair mutual requests before anything else. Two students who name each other go together; a one-sided request goes into the regular match.

Send the form four to six weeks before move-in and close it two weeks before, which leaves time to pair and notify everyone by email.

Roommate questionnaire questions

Can a camp or a school trip use it?

Yes. Change the intro and the bedtime options to fit, such as lights out at 10. Tidiness and noise matter in a cabin too. The visitors question matters less on a trip, so swap it for one that does, such as whether someone snores or needs a night light. Close the form a week before departure, so counselors get cabin lists in time.

Who sees the answers?

Only the people with access to your form's responses. Say who that is in the intro, as the template does, so students answer honestly. Ask students to send health or accessibility needs to the housing office directly rather than through this form. If you share the export with student staff, remove the email column first.

Can I add a gender or year question?

Yes. Most housing teams match within a floor or year group. Add a dropdown with your own options in the editor. Make it required, since a student with no answer can't be placed in a group. Sort the export by that column before you sort by bedtime, so every pair stays inside the right group.
