Hosting game night on video

Send the invite a week ahead and the link on the afternoon of. People who see a link far in advance lose it.

Time zones decide the start. If most players are in Europe and a few in the Americas, start at 9 pm London, which is 4 pm in New York.

Run the games most people ticked. Browser games like Codenames and Gartic Phone need no install; check that everyone has the apps for anything else.

Use the teammate answers, then balance the rest. Put one person who knows the game on each team so nobody spends round one reading rules.

Online game night questions

How many players work for an online game night?

Six to twelve works for most party games. With more, split into two calls with different games and swap halfway through. Codenames plays best with four to eight people in two teams. Check the yes count in your responses the day before, and pick the games that fit the number of players you really have.

Can I use it for a remote team social?

Yes. Change the intro to your team's time and keep the rest. The teammate question helps new hires get paired with someone they know. Run it at the end of a workday rather than over lunch, and keep it to 45 minutes. The time zone answers show whether one start time works or two smaller sessions fit better.

What if people want to play games that aren't listed?

Add them as options, or turn on Other in the editor so players can write one in. Run the top two by votes. Count the ticks a few days before the call. If a game needs an app or a paid copy, say so in the option name, so nobody finds out at the start of the evening.
