Letters to baby

Guests write letters the child opens at eighteen, with a guess at who they'll be.

What's inside

Every guest gets the same letter page. A guest writing for a whole family is asked who signs, so the letter carries every name.

Making the letter time capsule

Send the link with the shower invitation, or put it on a card at the shower as a QR code. Typed letters are easier to print than handwriting on the day, and guests who can't come still write one.

Give a prompt in the intro: the world the baby is born into, what the parents were like that year, a piece of advice. Letters with small details, prices, songs, the news, are the ones that read best eighteen years later.

The photo of the writer today is what makes the capsule. At eighteen, the child sees the aunt they know, twenty years younger.

Print each letter with its photo, seal them in envelopes with the writer's name and store the box with the baby's documents. Keep the replies too, as a digital copy.

Letters to baby questions

Can I change the opening age?

Yes. Change the intro and the thank-you heading to any birthday: the first, the tenth or the twenty-first. The heading names the year the letters open, so work it out from the birth year, like 2026 plus 21 is 2047. For a young age, ask writers in the intro to keep words simple, since a ten-year-old will read alone.

Do the parents read the letters now?

Replies go to whoever saved the form. Many hosts print them without reading, and the parents decide whether to peek. For a full surprise, ask a friend or grandparent to create the form, so the letters never reach the parents' account. They hand over the sealed envelopes at the shower.

Can grandparents who don't use phones write one?

Someone can fill in the form for them, typing their letter and signing it with their name. A grandchild or the host can sit with them at the shower and type while they talk. Choose My whole family when grandparents write together, so both names go on the letter, and take the photo on the spot.
