Carpool sign-up

Drivers offer free seats and riders say where they start, so nobody's left at the station.

What's inside

Drivers are asked how many seats they have free and when they leave; riders skip straight to where they're leaving from.

Matching cars in one evening

Send the link a week before the trip, to everyone going. Drivers often don't think of offering until they see others asking for rides.

Add up the free seats before you match. If riders outnumber seats, ask one more person to drive, or plan a station pickup in two rounds.

Match by starting point first, then by time. Sort the replies by where people leave from, and pair each rider with the nearest driver.

Send each driver their riders' names and numbers in one message, and each rider their driver's. The phones in the replies are there for exactly that.

Carpool questions

Can riders see who's driving?

No. Replies reach only you, so phone numbers stay private until you match people. Then you share each driver's number with their riders. Write in the intro that numbers are shared only within each car, so nobody is surprised by a text from a stranger. If a rider prefers not to share, pass the pickup time to them yourself.

Should riders chip in for gas?

Agree on it in the intro so nobody's surprised, for example fuel and tolls split by everyone in the car. Fillio takes no payment; riders settle up with their driver. A flat amount, like ten dollars each for a two-hour drive, saves awkward math at the gas station. Say whether drivers pay their own share too.

Does it work for games or school runs?

Yes. Change the title and intro to the game or the school, and duplicate the form for each week so the seats start fresh. For school runs, add a line in the intro about car seats for younger kids. Drivers give a leave time in their answer, so pair the 7:45 drivers with families whose school starts at 8.
